Goat gestation calculator

A doe carries kids about 150 days — right on five months, and does keep to it well. Put in the breeding date for her kidding date and the jobs due before it.

Goat gestation calculator

150 days

Put in the date she was bred and you will get the due date, the normal window either side of it, and the dates worth writing on the calendar between now and then. The full chart is further down the page.

How far apart the breeds really are

Every dot is a breed average. The shaded band is the normal window for a single goat — which is narrower than the gap between the shortest and longest breed, and that is the part worth noticing.

Every figure below traces to a published study, and the ones we could not source are left out rather than guessed at. Pick a breed in the calculator and both the date and the window move with it.

The detail, if you want it

Five months, and does keep to it better than cows do

Goats are more punctual than cattle. The normal spread runs about 145 to 155 days, which is tight enough that a doe more than a few days off her date is worth paying attention to rather than shrugging at.

Triplets do not make her kid early. Nearly every goat page online says they do. The two studies that actually measured it — 1,468 pregnancies across six breeds, and a separate Boer study — both found the number of kids made no significant difference to the length. Total litter weight does matter, but you cannot know that in advance, so it is no use to you on the calendar.

Knowing the breeding date is the whole game

If you hand-breed or pen-breed and write the date down, a 150-day count gets you within a couple of days almost every time. If a buck ran with the does all season, you have a five-week window and a lot of standing around.

Does that were bred on an observed standing heat are the ones where this calculator earns its keep.

The last month is the one that counts

Most of the kid growth happens in the final six weeks, which is when her feed needs climb sharply and when pregnancy toxaemia shows up in does carrying multiples on thin rations. The calculator marks that window so it does not sneak up on you.

CD&T boosters go in about four weeks out so the antibodies are in the colostrum. Get that timing wrong and you have vaccinated the doe without protecting the kids.

Built on a 150-day gestation. Dates are month and day only, so this chart works for any year — with one catch: if the pregnancy runs through 29 February, the real due date lands one day later than the chart says. The calculator at the top of the page already accounts for that.

Questions people actually ask

How long are goats pregnant?

About 150 days, or five months. Normal runs roughly 145 to 155 days.

Do Nigerian Dwarf goats have a shorter gestation?

There is a number circulating for Nigerian Dwarf — usually 145 days — and it does not trace back to any study. Nor do the numbers published for Nubian, Saanen, LaMancha or Pygmy. They come from other calculator sites quoting each other.

Breeds that have been measured: Boer at 148, Granadina at 149, Alpine at 151, Toggenburg at 152. For everything else, 150 days is the honest answer, and the Miniature Dairy Goat Association's own calculator uses the same 145 to 155 range for every goat.

Does litter size change the kidding date?

No, and this is the most commonly repeated wrong fact about goats. A study of 1,468 pregnancies found the number of kids was not a significant source of variation in gestation length, and a separate study of Boer does found the same.

What is significant is the combined weight of the litter, which you have no way of knowing until they are on the ground. Plan on 150 days whether she is scanned for one or for four.

Do older does kid earlier or later?

Earlier, slightly, which is the opposite of what a lot of extension pages say. Across those same 1,468 pregnancies it ran 151.3 days at her first kidding, 150.6 through her middle years, and 149.9 by her seventh. It is about a day and a half in total, so it changes nothing you would actually do.

How can you tell a doe is close to kidding?

The udder fills over the last couple of weeks and tightens hard in the last day or two. The ligaments either side of her tailhead soften and go, which you can feel with your fingers — when they disappear entirely she is usually inside twelve hours.

She will also go off on her own and start pawing at bedding. That is your cue to stop checking hourly and stay put.

How soon can you tell if a goat is pregnant?

Ultrasound picks it up from about 25 to 30 days and can count kids reasonably well from around 45 to 60 days, which is genuinely useful for sorting feed groups. Blood tests work from about 30 days.

Where these numbers come from

Every figure on this page traces to a university extension publication or a veterinary reference. If you think one is wrong, the sources are right here so you can check it yourself.

Worth knowing

  • Carrying triplets does not make her kid early. This is the most repeated wrong fact in goat content. The two best studies — 1,468 pregnancies across six breeds, and a separate Boer study — both found the number of kids made no significant difference. What does matter is total litter weight, which you cannot know in advance.
  • Older does kid slightly earlier, not later. 151.3 days at her first kidding, 150.6 through her middle years, 149.9 by her seventh. Plenty of extension pages state the opposite.
  • A short gestation is a real warning. Kid survival to 25 days ran 78% for pregnancies under 148 days, 87% at 148–151, 94% at 152–155, and 95% at 156 and over. Longer is better in goats, within reason.
  • There is no trustworthy published figure for Nubian, Nigerian Dwarf, LaMancha, Saanen or Pygmy gestation. The numbers circulating for those breeds trace back to other calculator sites, not to data. We have left them off rather than repeat them — use 150 days.

Figures last checked August 2026.
